The Bonhoeffer Biography: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy showcases the vast contributions Dietrich Bonhoeffer made during a suddenly interrupted life. Bonhoeffer is memorable for his activity within the anti-Nazi resistance, founding the Confessing Church, creating many new theological ideas, and having the courage to re-enter a war zone to stop the continued elimination of innocent people. Although he was hanged weeks before Germany surrendered and Adolf Hitler was conquered, Bonhoeffer left an important theological legacy. Bonhoeffer influenced theological studies. It contributed both negatively and positively. One aspect that many see as a negative contribution is his attempt to create a religionless Christianity. He philosophizes that God is dead and many see this as a dig at Christianity, even though it still represents a great and interesting contribution to faith and theology. Although he desired a faith without God, it sparked the beginnings of questions about what the meaning of God truly was. Many theologians have attempted to answer this question and this has led to various new theological ideas as well as a better understanding of the Christian faith. (Kappelman, 2014)Another huge positive contribution of Bonhoeffer is his theory on ethics. Bonhoeffer states that the purpose of ethics for man should be the restoration of unity with God. Bonhoeffer means that our world is divided into many areas other than work, church, family, friends, etc. It discusses how it is a person's job to better understand themselves in each individual role and how the various roles come together and also collide. This will ultimately lead to returning to treasure the world God created and his absolute... middle of paper... and doing what is right. I feel like I can also take this opportunity to start over with my faith and see Christianity from a completely new point of view. I want to look back at my faith history and the Bible for guidance in retraining my faith to discover where God and Jesus are truly leading me. Bonhoeffer showed me that believing in God does not simply mean going to church, praying, and singing during the worship service. Being a disciple of God is much more. It takes knowledge, openness, acceptance and the ability to learn from your mistakes. The main and complete message I learned from Dietrich Bonhoeffer is that I must fully trust God and give my all to Him with all my heart. Bonhoeffer himself said “We must be ready to let God interrupt us” and that is exactly what I am waiting for. (“Quotes from Dietrich Bonhoeffer,” n.d.)
