Gangs and gang activities are extremely harmful to our social order. “Gangs are groups of people, mostly young males, who band together for protection and a sense of belonging. Gangs are often associated with violence and crime. In fact, the U.S. Department of Justice officially defines a youth gang as a group of young people involved in criminal activity.” (Gang, 2003). According to www.fbi.gov, approximately 33,000 violent street, motorcycle, and prison gangs are criminally active in the United States today, with approximately 1.4 million members ( FBI, 2010 ). This should be the reason for greater action by our society to stop the rise of gang-related crimes in America. What types of people participate in gangs? “Gang members are typically young people of color who live in low-income neighborhoods. Law enforcement reported in 1999 that over 800,000 youth were involved in gangs in the United States. Around 50% of these gang members came from the underclass and another 35% came from a working class background. Forty-seven percent of youth gang members were Hispanic and 31% were African American. The average age of a gang member is seventeen or eighteen” (Gangs, 2003). The bandmates dress similarly; they usually wear a t-shirt, sometimes a specific color, tennis shoes, and blue jeans or khaki pants or shorts, which are usually baggy. A gang member typically has a decorative bandana hanging from one of his pockets, also of a specific color. An additional item possessed by most gang members is at least one tattoo that shows their dedication to the gang. Most gangs recruit new members by tattooing them with a mark that distinguishes them from other gangs. violence will be completely prevented. With the help of the population of each municipality and district it is conceivable to stop and reduce the unnecessary amount of gang followers and gang-related crimes. We must consider that there are, in fact, countless means to reduce the size of gangs in America. Various substitutes for being a gang member are the availability of programs in the school and community, educational programs for parents and children, and the capture of the most loyal gang members and directors. It is essential that our protection as American residents begin the process of managing and limiting gangs now. Without stopping gang involvement, America will further transform into a brutal and treacherous nation for the blameless masses.
