It's a Sunday afternoon and you're doing laundry in your two-story house. This involves running up and down the stairs from your second-floor bedroom to the first-floor laundry room. carrying a very heavy basket full of laundry. After a few trips you notice that you are tired, light-headed and that your mouth is dry and sticky; you wonder why this is so. When you physically train, you use more water to transport glycogen which creates more energy and you sweat to cool your body; therefore you need to drink more fluids to rehydrate. When you reach the kitchen, you open the refrigerator and are faced with two options, drink water or drink a sports drink. Your wonder is what is the best solution for rehydration. Before you know what the best solution for rehydration is, you need to find out why you need to hydrate in the first place. According to Martina Navratilova, water is used in the body as an assistant for loading and storing glycogen in the body, glycogen is the element from which energy is converted into the muscles of the body. Water carries red blood cells in the veins and arteries and is vital to the life of the body's cells due to the nutrients it carries (5 functions of water in the body). Water also helps the body maintain homeostasis by producing sweat and evaporating water from the skin which effectively cools the body (5 Functions of Water in the Body).
