Eugenics is the study of agents under social control that can enhance or impair the racial qualities of future generations both physically and mentally. After the great turn of the century, “eugenics” developed into a worldwide movement. (Vermont University, 2003) It was led by scientists and scholars in different fields and funded by wealthy philanthropists, also supported by statesmen. Eugenics has played a very vital and central role in the political, social and intellectual history of numerous different peoples and nations. (Vermont University, 2003) Eugenics is a very controversial topic. Eugenics in theory and practice attracted much criticism, and opposition inspired revisions. Interpretations of eugenics and distinctive manifestations in public policy varied across time, place, and professional and political cultures (Vermont University, 2003). Furthermore, eugenics has been practiced in America for a long time. It is the history of eugenics that makes it such a famous topic in society. After the civil war there was great turbulence in the economy and a large influx of immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe. The United States economy fluctuated rapidly and remained tenuous until World War I (Drake, n.d.). As the economy became more uncertain, social inequalities between different segments of society became even more visible. In the same period the great idea of Social Darwinism became very popular and was used to explain some social inequalities. Social Darwinism uses Charles Darwin's important concept of natural selection and applies it to society (Drake, n.d.).
