In my interview I had the pleasure of conversing with an individual who was not only an adult student but now also serves as an adjunct professor for adult students at a university. Some may not realize the parallels between adult learners, yet there are still major differences that impact both. It was refreshing to find a person who can succeed as a professional, student, and, more recently, professor all at the same time. My goal is to introduce you to my amazing interviewee and paint a vivid picture of his journey, his growth, and his challenges along the way. Surprisingly, this interaction was able to accommodate many excuses and reasons why a person would be too busy to go back to school. After a 60-minute interview with Dr. Rob Geis, director of procurement at BayCare Health System, I was ready to take on the world. Dr. Geis earned his master's and doctoral degrees from State University while working at BayCare. After completing two advanced degrees he was promoted to Director. He currently teaches two online courses at the University of Phoenix on healthcare management and procurement. As director of BayCare Health System, he must conduct training for prospective providers and current providers along with training sessions for employees who will engage directly with providers on behalf of the health system. It was inspiring to see someone who managed to blend together three different adult learning experiences; a student, a corporate trainer and an adjunct professor. Adult learning environments are very different in the corporate world compared to an educational setting. Both can be found in lecture hall environments and both can have distracted students; however there are…half of the paper… After my time with Dr. Geis, several questions and personal reflections on his journey began to arise. What drives a man in his fifties to go back to school to earn a master's degree and then a doctorate? while maintaining a successful career in a large company. Our lives are full of excuses, disguised as reasons, why we can't do or complete something. When in reality we only need one motivating force to overcome them all and achieve our goals. Sometimes the fear of starting over something we haven't done for some time leads us to not revisit past failures or incomplete goals in our life. In a meeting with an exceptionally motivated person, my commitment to overcoming obstacles is at an all-time high. Knowing that I just need a reason to succeed and an uncompromising commitment to do so, I'm excited to see my future and reflect on my journey.
