Genetically we are almost identical. They are valuable to the environment and, consequently, to humans as they maintain forest species, which creates income, food and medicine for local communities. Great apes are not given the opportunity to sustain themselves with low reproductive rates during increased commercial hunting. This alone is too much without taking into consideration other forms of habitat disturbance occurring at the same time. Activist groups must remain persistent in their efforts to protect primates and educate not only those directly affected by the problem, but the global community as a whole.
