Healthcare has always been an interesting topic around the world. Voltaire once said, “The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.” It may seem that in healthcare nothing is achieved in different healthcare systems, but in the end many try to cure diseases and improve healthcare systems. Everyone is always competing for the best healthcare. Different healthcare systems are different around the world, but all with similar ideas on how to provide at least some form of healthcare. Some countries in particular will be highlighted: Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Japan for the way they manage costs, access and quality in their countries' healthcare systems. Switzerland is best known for its excellent healthcare, ranked as the best in the world. This is largely due to the way it is organized. The reorganization began in 1994 with the federal law on health insurance, which came into force in 1996. The system is essentially organized into 26 cantons, which are equivalent to American states. Each canton is responsible for the healthcare of the populations of that region and insurance companies operate on a regional basis (James). The government decides which policies will be covered and sets prices for the cost of medical expenses (McManus). Furthermore, there is a complex way of organizing access, quality and costs in the system. In terms of access, everyone is required to purchase and maintain healthcare within the first 3 months of living in the country. If you can't afford insurance, the government subsidizes low-income families. This is extremely important to ensure that everyone has healthcare. Again access is gained based on what the canton says... middle of the paper... a care system would be difficult to implement in America with the complex methods of everything being paid for. We have many different systems in the United States. However, with Obama's new assistance, it is arriving and making its way with similar qualities in those different countries. It's interesting to note how American healthcare is different from anyone else's in the world. Most are universal, necessary for healthcare. We are trying to achieve this in America, but many people don't like being taxed if they don't have it. There is certainly a lot we can learn from other countries. Overall Switzerland has a great system, with the UK close behind. Japan is also on the right track. America is certainly trying to make its way, and will eventually. It all comes down to evaluating what is more important, the cost, quality or access to healthcare.
