Social media has a strong influence on today's society. Everyone who is anyone posts daily about their life and what they did that day. Celebrities to people known socially from a small town. There are very few people who don't do it. It would therefore be easy to control what the majority of the population sees. As a result, social media could be used to create a dystopia because so many use it; people post personal information that anyone can see and are easily influenced. People find using social media fun, even enjoyable. Harvard students examined this claim: "Through a series of experiments, researchers at Harvard University learned through study that the act of revealing information about oneself activates the same part of the brain associated with the feeling of pleasure, the same pleasure we get from eating food, getting money or even having sex" (site2). In other words, many find it enjoyable to post things about themselves and discover new things about those they know or admire, to the point that using social media every day becomes an addiction. The majority of social media audiences are teenagers or children between the ages of 7 and 21. Older people also post status, but not as frequently as younger generations. Frequent use of social media can lead to depression, antisocial behavior (ironically), romantic problems. and even death(site3). It sounds very similar to the symptoms you receive when taking medications, and for good reason. When someone posts something personal about themselves, anyone can now access that information. The government, the bullies, Steve the shady kid down the street; anyone with a device and that app or social media can access that information. That is... middle of paper... People don't want to communicate; instead they will strive to find new and easier ways to do so. Thus prolonging the use of social media instead of slowing its progress. In conclusion, social media can be used to create a dystopia. This is due to the sheer amount of people posting. People are easily influenced and publish personal information. All these attributes combined create an easily controllable company. You don't have to be overly intelligent to control society. If the massive use of social media continues, a dystopia is a distinct possibility.
