Thesis: is the development of a virtuous character an adequate basis for ethics? My thesis is that a virtuous character can be seen as an adequate basis for ethics, yet it can be flawed in some way. I believe that in Western civilization there may be a more flexible form of what virtue actually means for people, which in turn develops a new practicality. Since there are different communities it is necessary that different virtues exist. However, because it is based on a more communal idea, it does not apply to every person. And a secular community can adapt and become more efficient in its new environment, making the whole idea of morality merely pragmatic more than anything else. Argument/Motivation: I first looked at Elizabeth Anscombe's ideas on Aristotle's virtue ethics, she had heavily criticized him in her article "Modern Moral Philosophy". He had argued that essentially we should all stop doing moral philosophy altogether. That the meaning of moral concepts such as being and ought to be are inconsistent with each other and that all modern philosophy is fundamentally the same. Anscombe believed that modern moral philosophy had sought to rely on theism for the use of its concepts and to reject it. Believing that the rest of the beliefs were corrupted and accused of a term he coined consequentialism, because he believed it made even the most evil things tolerable if the benefits were sufficient. That said, Anscombe believed that any moral obligation should be abandoned if there was no kind of rationality in it. It turned out that secular approaches to modern theories lacked any kind of foundation. Concepts like “morally owed” and “obliged” are legalistic and therefore would require…half of paper…character. We all had the same kind of answer to the question we asked ourselves which was an adequate basis for ethics, but as the world is becoming more modern there is less need for it than before, and being moral has become more important. become more pragmatic over the years as society begins to change and evolve. Reflection/Evaluation: I believed that overall we worked well as a team with each other, each presenting our ideas to each other and helping each other. I had struggled trying to answer the actual question because there was a lot about moral philosophy and how it was imperfect. There wasn't much about what it meant to be a virtuous character and what was actually meant by the term ethics. However I really enjoyed reading Anscombe and Aristotle and learning what it means for a person to be virtuous and have good character.
