Topic > Wind energy: renewable energy and wind energy - 725

Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the sun and has been a source of energy for a long time. So basically, if the sun shines and still exists, the wind will always exist too, both on the planet Neptune and here on Earth. It is a renewable energy resource, which means it will always be here on Earth, so it will not run out. This gives it a major advantage over fossil fuels, not to mention that fossil fuels harm the Earth in several ways. Much of wind energy today comes from turbines. We use wind energy and wind turbines to harness electricity for use. The way we get electricity through wind energy is that when the wind blows, turbine blades spin, which then spin a shaft connected to a special generator, which then creates electricity. This is a great example of how some wind turbines are specifically designed to create electricity. Their size also helps their purpose, some are up to 200 feet tall! The wind turbines used to create the necessary electricity transform the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy, which is where the name "wind energy" comes from. Additionally, wind turbines can be used for several reasons, but the generator in the wind turbine is what turns the mechanical energy into electricity that we can use. In addition to wind energy, another alternative energy resource is hydroelectric energy. Hydroelectric power is electricity produced from the kinetic energy of water moving over a waterfall or dam. To put it in simpler terms, this is electricity produced from running water. Water, just like wind, has been used as a source of energy for some time. That said, one advantage of hydropower is that water is a renewable resource, thanks to the water cycle. This means that,… middle of the paper… in the United States, so how much is used varies greatly depending on the area. In nuclear energy, there are nuclear power plants, much the same as in wind energy there are wind turbines. Well, these nuclear power plants work through a process called nuclear fission. In nuclear fission, the nucleus of an atom is divided into 2 nuclei. In turn, heat is released. Then the heat produced in nuclear power plants is released by fission reactions. This heat is used to turn water into steam. This steam then spins and turns the blades of a turbine to generate electricity. This is how electricity is produced through nuclear energy! But as good as nuclear energy may seem, it still ultimately presents some risks. It has its pros and cons. An accident at a nuclear power plant can be incredibly deadly and dangerous, and a safe way to store radioactive waste for thousands of years has yet to be found.
