I also think he wanted the working class and other socialists who were pushing these people out of the pen to stop and think about what they were doing and how it was damaging the Movement socialist (182). Orwell goes on to explain why these undecided citizens are fleeing socialism. The strongest explanation he provides is the prejudice that the middle class harbors against the working class and that most take to their graves (137). This prejudice is imprinted in the minds of middle-class children at school and applies to lower-middle-class children as well (123). These lower-middle class people who feel superior to those of a lower class may also be in worse economic conditions than those they discriminate against because of the way the middle class is structured. The English middle class was built on the traditions and mannerisms of people of that class and not on their income as in many social systems (123). This English social system allows these lower middle classes to side with the upper middle class even if they have the same beliefs as the working class on the sole basis that the lower classes are stinky and not as worthy as them (127). .
