There Should Be No Required Courses in College There are many arguments to support abolishing core classes in college. One reason is financial: Much of the tuition money students pay to college goes toward their courses. It is not fair to the college to take this money and make student decisions for them. Students should have the right to make this decision for themselves. This not only results in carelessly spent funds, but also dissatisfied students who will therefore not appreciate a forced lesson. Secondly, university is the place where a person goes to discover himself. This is one of the many goals of the university system, and the discovery process is hindered by unnecessary mandatory classes. Students should be able to try many different lessons to discover what interests them most, not to be fed knowledge they may already know (and perhaps isn't of interest to them). If required courses were eliminated, it would free up a lot of time that students could then use to pursue their interests. College exists to help people become unique individuals, not to fit every person into the same standard mold. Third, college selection systems are designed to admit most students based on what they already know (after all, the purpose of high school is to prepare you for college). If the selection system had actually been accurate and efficient, they would have chosen students who already knew the required material, so they would not have needed to attend core classes. This would save the university funds because it would not have to teach redundant lessons that only cover what a student knows. For an institution that promotes self-discovery and educational freedom, mandatory courses appear to be dogmatically useless..
