In all Shakespeare's works there is a common pattern. This model is Aristotle's “Tragic Hero”. In order for the play to follow this theme, there must be a character of noble birth, who causes his own downfall, who regrets what he has done and then dies. All of Shakespeare's plays follow this theme, all except Hamlet. Hamlet follows a different theme called "Revenge Play". The play Revenge is based on a play called “Spanish Tragedy” by Thomas Kyd. The comedy of Vengeance was very popular during the Renaissance. For a play to be considered a "revenge play" it must have the following criteria: a secret murder (Hamlet's father is a murderer), a ghostly vision of the victim (Hamlet sees the ghost of his father), a period in which the plot as revenge is expected (Hamlet thinks about how to make Claudius confess), a madness of anger in a sudden act of the avenger (Hamlet kills Polonius) and an ending with the death of everyone, including the avenger.
