Another limitation to the topic of this article is that studies usually only include males. Little information has been published regarding children and women facing administrative segregation or solitary confinement. These changes are hoped to help reduce the amount of self-harm experienced in prisons and jails. Further studies are needed to see whether the likelihood of mental illness increases in prisoners who have been in solitary confinement. Studies also need to look at inmates suffering from mental illness before solitary confinement and see whether solitary confinement worsens their symptoms or even worsens their mental illness overall..
