An example to illustrate this would be the case of Mr DB, aged 25, who was in a road accident with serious injuries requiring a blood transfusion. He refused treatment because he was a Jehovah's Witness and was conscious even after the accident. His decision was accepted with respect for his autonomy, however if he had been unconscious the healthcare team would normally have carried out the blood transfusion as it was classified as an emergency and would have acted as best they could.
