Topic > Eating Disorders: Bulimia Nervosa - 897

Today, nearly ten to fifteen percent of adolescent boys suffer from eating disorders in today's population (Ray, 2004), and nearly thirty-five to fifty-seven percent of adolescent girls suffer from them even by one (Boutelle, Neumark-Sztainer, Story, &Resnick, 2002; Neumark-Sztainer&Hannan, 2001; Wertheim et al., 2009). One of the most common forms of eating disorders is bulimia nervosa. This is a psychological disorder that has nutritional and physical consequences for someone (Smolin). This disorder involves an individual consuming an excessive amount of calories in a short amount of time and immediately after consuming, causing them to remove the food from their system. ("Bulimia nervosa", July). In today's society, girls, adolescents and young women are structured by society to have this certain appearance. This then leaves a lasting impact on these young women and girls. They feel they have to look a certain way just to be noticed and accepted (Viinamäki, 2013). While most people believe that eating disorders are only prevalent in women, in reality men suffer from this problem too. Boys, adolescents and men at an early age suffer from self-esteem problems and try to have that type of "perfect male" body, which they conform to even by seeking good manners in eating disorders (Ray, 2004). Overall, bulimia nervosa is a much more common disorder than we realize and affects both teenage girls and boys. It affects them psychologically and leaves a lasting impact on them. In 1979, a British psychiatrist named Gerald Russel coined the name bulimia nervosa. He stated that one takes part in these bulimic ways due to three factors. Having this urge to overeat, an extreme fear of… middle of paper… includes excessive amounts of exercise and fasting. Induced vomiting is the most common form of purging because it is the easiest and fastest way to eliminate food from the body. The individual uses their finger or a smaller instrument to enhance the gag reflex. By pushing the finger into the back of the throat, this will cause an initial feeling of retching and nausea and will hopefully cause vomiting ("'How to'', 2014). Since water accounts for almost half of our weight total body weight, bulimic people take diuretics to reduce water weight in their body. On average, women have about 50% water weight and men have about 60% water weight (Parks, 2013). ) The final way a bulimic can engage in purging is to take laxatives. This produces an increase in watery diarrhea and allows the individual to think that no nutritional factors from the food have been absorbed by the body (Smolin).).
