Topic > The Pros and Cons of Drones - 696

The post-9/11 era in US defense policy has been proactive rather than reactive. The United States has sought ways to gather intelligence on our enemy while ensuring the safety of our troops. The drone was the answer to the quest because it is capable of securing US lives, forcible projection of power over our enemies, and strategic and stealth tactical attack. Those who oppose the use of drones in warfare say it violates international law. They believe the attacks have no justification and therefore violate international law. (Moskowitz) They state that the advantages of using drones do not outweigh the disadvantages of using drones. The opposition claims that civilian casualties represent 2-10% of total casualties due to drones firing at the wrong targets and that civilians are collateral damage. (Globalresearch) Dissidents think this causes more unrest than peace in some regions due to the collateral damage caused to buildings and civilians and is another sign of American arrogance. (ABC News) While their points are valid, these reasons do not justify ceasing drone activity. One of the advantages of the drone is to preserve the lives of the United States. Drones can now replace surveillance missions inside enemy territory without risking capture and death of pilots. Drones are capable of crossing borders without putting the lives of pilots at risk. They can stay in foreign countries and explore potential threats for a long period of time. They can then decide when to strike the target with minimal civilian casualties. (E-IR) Drones are also able to hit a target with better targeting strategies due to the removal of the pilot from the cockpit. (E-IR) In addition to a drone's ability to simply hunt down... means of paper... means that the drone is capable of attacking anything, anywhere at any time. The drone is capable of patrolling areas of Afghanistan and when a threat is identified it can dispatch a combat drone or, if the combat drone is already on patrol, it is capable of eliminating the target. The drone is equipped with Hellfire missiles, air-to-surface missiles capable of decimating any ground target. (E-IR) Examples of strategic tactical stealth attacks date back to February 7, 2002, when the CIA used a Predator drone to attack a convoy of SUVs full of Al Qaeda terrorists. Another example is on November 3, 2002, the CIA used a predator drone to launch an infernal missile at a car killing an al Qaeda leader. Both of these attacks cannot be carried out without putting many lives at risk, but thanks to the drone we are able to carry out this task without the risk of injury.
