Florence was where Childress displayed her writing skills. The play was written during the night because she was betting with a friend. Childress's friend said that no one can write a play that can be performed overnight, and Childress set out to prove her friend wrong. Without a doubt, Childress wrote Florence with strong personality, dialogue and conflict. The conflict was that African Americans needed to reject the stereotypical roles that people labeled them. Additionally, Childress illustrated that Black parents need to encourage their children to succeed. Later in 1952, Childress produced his own play, Gold Through the Trees. Childress was the first black woman to have her play produced in New York City. Three years after publishing Gold Through the Trees, Childress wrote a new play called Trouble in Mind. The show won an Obie Award and was admitted to Broadway, but it didn't make it. Because of Childress' strong will and love for her plays, Broadway asked Childress to make the ending of Trouble in Mind happier, but she insists not to.
