From a broken and fragmented life comes the gift that forever transforms the lives of others Ben Carson is a young African American boy (Jaishon Fisher) lives with his older brother Curtis and mother Sonya (Kimberly Ellis), both boys were raised by their mother in the poverty of the Detroit ghetto. Their mother Sonya (Kimberly) is raising the boys without the help of their father who is a chronic gambler and abandoned his family when Ben was 9 years old. Sonia is the boy's driving force who provides her children with her primary maternal protection, positive reinforcements and guild lines, nurturing their faith in God, education and self-esteem. Sonia (Kimberly) grew up in foster homes trying to find a way out of the system, she married at the tender age of 13 to the boy's father, believing this was her ticket out of the foster care system. He had only a third-grade education and could barely read or write; she was devastated when her husband left them for his first wife who was also still married. This left her suffering with bouts of depression that sometimes led her to neglect her children because she couldn't get out of bed. She provided for her children by washing other people's clothes and cleaning homes. Sonya lived mostly in a depressive state and had thought about suicide, but the love of her children prevented the fatal act. He thought he had passed on his bad genes and karma to his children, which led to them getting bad grades in school. Ben continually got Fs in class and when he got a D it was cause for celebration. Ben struggled in school, thought he was stupid and had very low self-esteem. He faced racial prejudice and ridicule from his classmates and teachers and… middle of paper… tackled a seriously injured man without supervision to save his life. He later performed a hemispherectomy removing half of her brain which caused seizures improving her quality of life. He became a renowned number one neonatal doctor. He was the first doctor to successfully separate conjoined twins, saving their lives and sparing their parents a lifetime of pain. He has continued to touch so many families by giving them hope and dreams for their children. This movie spans across all demographics and its audience would take away great life values that they can use in their daily lives. It also limits the thought process of Robert Kubey and Mihly Csikszentmihakyi and the effects of watching TV which revolutionize the thought process of both Marie Winn and Steven Johnson who believe that television is ultimately educational and does not cause negative effects to people..
