Controlling the Mind The ability to hold two contradictory ideas at the same time and accept both is known in George Orwell's novel 1984 as "doublethink". It is more than just a reality check, as it must be done consistently and immediately to ensure that all thoughts are orthodox. Doublethink is not forced on the citizens of 1984, but has become an action of everyday life, just like breathing and eating. It is essential for the stability of the Party and of all of Oceania because without it people's morale would collapse. Furthermore, doublethink prevents one from understanding the true reality of humanity, which allows the Party to maintain control over all aspects of life. The ability of the word “doublethink” to represent how the Party keeps the citizens of Oceania under its control makes it the most important word in the novel. Without “doublethink,” morale in Oceania would quickly deplete. An example of this is when the chocolate ration is reduced due to war. But instead of denouncing this defect to the people, the Party announces that the chocolate ration has actually been increased. Winston then rightly notes: “It seemed that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for having increased the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And just yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration would be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow it after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it. (Orwell 58-59) This is a great example of doublethink because any person with a stable mindset would notice the discrepancy between the announcement and the facts, but the citizens of Oceania not only swallow this lie, but also forget the past ration. This... middle of paper... the almost unlimited power of the Party. Not only does it represent how the Party maintains control, but it also shows how powerful it truly is. Only a large corporation could accomplish such a feat as to have complete control over the minds of all those who inhabit its territory. In this sense, doublethink and the Party are permanently intertwined in a symbiotic relationship, as neither could survive without the other. Since none of the Party's actions would be possible without doublethink, the Party's existence would not be possible, preventing its members from achieving their ultimate goal of absolute power. Likewise, doublethink could only be implemented by a strong and resourceful Party-like government. Therefore, doublethink is the most important word in the novel because it provides humans with the ability to create and maintain a negative utopia..
