Emerging adulthood, between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two, is a phase or rather a period of transition between late adolescence and full adulthood title. It is a phase that defines independence and life chances. This phase has been analyzed by theorists. Observing the development that occurs during this phase mentally, physically and emotionally. This essay will discuss three domains cognitive, physical and socio-emotional and will use the theories of Erikson, Levinsons, Vaillant, Labouvie-Vief, Sternberg and Piaget. An interview was conducted on a person in this age group to collect data and provide real-life examples. For the purposes of this post the interviewee will be known as Nigel. Nigel was born in Auckland on 11 February 1995 and is 19 years old. He is of Fijian, Indian and Tongan descent. Nigel recently finished high school and is currently completing a certificate in health disability at the New Zealand Careers College, and will be moving into level four health support. Sport has been a major influence in Nigel's life, but certain circumstances have influenced his decision regarding his future and so he is planning to further his career in sports physiotherapy at Auckland University of Technology. Nigel stated that he lived at home with his parents and was heavily dependent on them financially. This is because he had never been employed or worked for money in any environment. He has a small group of friends he has kept in touch with since high school and interacts well with his class in college. Nigel has a sister who is ten years older than him, he considers her his friend as well as his sister. He described that he could go to her for advice and talk to... half a sheet of paper...... and he knows what is right and what is wrong, he also said that he does not feel intimidated as he is strong physically and mentally . This example shows how all three domains are interrelated and how each aspect of the domains creates a structure of a person's personality. Through real-life examples, this essay explored the three domains of cognitive, physical, and social/emotional. It is evident that people in their early adulthood portray the established structure in these domains and proves that the theories explored are nearly accurate. Nigel's interview showed that all areas were related and that his experiences corresponded to most of the theories. His journey as an emerging adult is just the beginning. References Berk, E. L.
