The central figure of the novel, Heart of Darkness is Mr Kurtz. From the end of the first part to the end of the book in the third part, Mr Kurtz is talked about by almost everyone. Marlow had heard of Mr. Kurtz on the Continent, but the first tangible mention of his name came while he was converting with the manager of the Central Station. The director had a feeling of jealousy towards Mr. Kurtz because he thought that one day Mr. Kurtz could replace him and reach the highest position in the company. Marlow, and from him the reader hears all sorts of things about Mr. Kurtz from the beginning of the novel but his personal appearance in the narrative comes rather late. Kurtz, like Marlow, can be placed within a broader tradition. Kurtz resembles the archetypal "evil genius": the highly gifted but ultimately degenerate individual whose downfall is the stuff of legend. Kurtz is linked to figures such as Faustus, Satan in Milton's Paradise Lost, Ahab in Moby-Dick and Health cliff in Wuthering Height. like these characters, he is significant both for his style and eloquence and for his grandiose, almost megalomaniacal intrigues. In a world of banally malicious men and "flabby devils" attracting enough attention to be worthy of damnation is really something. Kurtz can be criticized: style completely prevails over substance, providing justification for amorality and evil. Kurtz excels over the protagonist precisely because of fact that it is through Kurtz that the reader becomes aware of the hypocrisy of the entire colonization project and its various inherent evils and malevolences. Therefore, the title, Heart Of Darkness, becomes completely justified. .
