Fain details schools like the University of Michigan that have implemented online, competency-based programs. The University of Michigan has targeted practicing medical officers with their competency-based online master's program in health professions education (Fain 2014, para. 19). The degree quantifies the experience the student has in the field and applies it to the completion of his or her degree (Fain 2014, para. 19). Additionally, the student is connected to a mentor who helps guide him or her through the specialization process (Fain 2014, para. 20). This connection with a person in this process helps the student continue working, get credit for their experience, and connect to a mentor to help their development.
