Most of the time the ideal environment of good teammates and a good coach is not present. On teams, there is a coach or one or more teammates who can be detrimental to the athlete's self-esteem. Most athletes have high and unstable self-esteem. This occurs because athletes usually have a lot of confidence in themselves and their abilities to play their sport, but they can be greatly influenced by events around them. Athletes take pride in how good they are and, if this suggests otherwise, they tend to act aggressively and become defensive or angry. Athletes surround themselves with people who don't put them in situations that go against their opinion of themselves, making them appear to have high self-esteem. This is very common in athletes because if they don't believe in themselves they don't work hard to become a high level athlete. Self-esteem in high-performance athletes isn't just about their ability to play their sport, it carries over into their everyday life. Athletes' high self-esteem is demonstrated by how they present themselves to their friends, family and in a social context.
