America is the nation of immigrants. America was founded on the principles of free speech, equality, and the pursuit of happiness, and this principle of freedom encouraged people to come to America. Being an American does not simply mean being born on American soil, it means believing in and holding the beliefs of American principles. Scruton stated that “to inherit a culture it is necessary to identify with it; and if you cannot identify with it, then you must find a new identity by rejecting it.” Being an American means living by its values, such as patriotism, individualism, conformity, success and equality. While these are American values, the conflicts that occur between the values and those who hold them is what makes an American. These values lead Americans to become loyal but logical, expressive but traditional, and hypocritically tolerant or truly tolerant but discriminating, all because we hold dear the principles of free speech, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The narrow definition of patriotism is love or devotion to one's country. In America, patriotism has evolved from its founding principle to become a value in American life. This leads many Americans to view loyalty as a core American virtue. It made Americans connote the word patriotism with loyalty. Being loyal to the country means being patriotic; therefore, if one is not patriotic, by definition he is not loyal to the country. This sort of ultimatum divides Americans into two categories: authoritarian patriots and democratic patriots. People who believe that if someone is unpatriotic, then they are disloyal, are authoritarian patriots and "it is a surrender of one's will, the right to choose, and the need to understand authority" (Westh...... half of sheet ......High School, La Mesa.
