As they become increasingly obese, children in America today may suffer the consequences of not having good health as they age and living much shorter lives than adults in Today. Contrary to many beliefs, "obesity, which used to be a middle-aged and later phenomenon, has now spread to younger ages, in the context of a notable decrease in physical activity," said Caleb Finch ("Wasowicz "). More than half the time, this obesity accompanies the child into adulthood. Researchers are often asked many questions about the causes of obesity and often find answers. Sometimes parents are too scared to tell their children and doctors are afraid of upsetting patients. Additionally, food is easier to access in larger, unhealthy portions than healthy foods, and many children don't exercise as much as they should. Obesity can have detrimental effects on a child's physical and mental well-being. Obesity brings many hidden problems, one of which is diabetes. No extreme weight gain is healthy; many times it can cause diabetes, which is described as “the inability of cells to absorb glucose, the sugar molecules that fuel muscles, nerves and the brain” (Evans). Diabetes not only forces children to constantly watch what they eat and monitor their blood sugar, but they also have to worry about vision loss, nerve damage and other problems associated with diabetes. Diseases that were previously only found in adults, such as diabetes, are now also found in children (Torkos). While most kids worry about breaking a bone or scraping their knee at recess, some worry about remembering to check their blood sugar or whether they've had an insulin shot.
