Topic > Erikson's Psychosocial Roles in the Movie Harold and Maude

despair is the psychosocial stage of development that can be observed from age 65 until death. Ego integrity occurs when an adult feels a sense of contentment with life and accepts death as an inevitable reality. Despair is when individuals lack the feeling of contentment and completeness. They often become desperate and fear death (McAdams, 2009). Maude fits into the ego integrity portion of this phase. Maude knows who she is and has enjoyed life to the fullest. She feels satisfied with the way she lives her life and literally welcomes death with open arms. On Maude's 80th birthday, she takes an overdose of pills to end her life because she doesn't want to live life as an old woman.
