Some examples of natural disasters include: droughts, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tsunamis, and hurricanes. These events can lead to very catastrophic consequences and the devastating loss of homes, jobs or, worse, lives of many people. Accidents are the main cause of natural disasters, but unfortunately some natural disasters are also caused by human activities. According to Anthony Penna and Jennifer Rivers, authors of Natural Disasters in a Global Environment, although our society, as a whole, has greatly improved at raising warnings and responding to natural disasters, our structured and effective ways of managing emergencies can give us a sense of false security (1). These natural disasters occur continuously all over the world: some of them can be more devastating and cause more victims than others. Numerous natural disasters have occurred in the United States. In recent times, two of the most notable hurricanes hit the United States in 2005 and 2012. These hurricanes were Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy. Both Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy are among the deadliest and costliest hurricanes to ever hit the United States. The goal of this article is to provide information about the two major hurricanes that took place in the United States and then compare them to see what their similarities are with each other and how different they really are. They are... middle of paper... at home and, given the circumstances in which they find themselves, they have also remained without food and water. The health conditions of the surviving people were also very bad as they did not have access to any healthcare or hospitals.
