Topic > Jewish Music in New Orleans: A Look at New Orleans…

On Halloween weekend of 2009, I had the opportunity to attend a major music festival in New Orleans – Voodoo Experience. Prior to this assignment, I had no intention of attending this event. However, as I began to put together my topic and goals for this project, this became my best opportunity to experiment with what I set out to understand. The purpose of this music culture research report is to chronicle Jewish music in New Orleans, specifically the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars. I gave up the typical Halloween experience to look for a band that seemed to be the ultimate blend I was looking for: a Jewish klezmer band that was distinctly New Orleans. Besides this show, I was able to admire many great bands playing at the festival. I also make a point of following the main bands, Jane's Addiction and Kiss, who both put on great shows. Klezmer can be summarized as "traditional, instrumental party music of Yiddish-speaking Eastern European Jews". (Strom 2) Literally Yiddish for "vessel of song", it is characterized by a festive, celebratory atmosphere and human-like expressive lines. Klezmer is secular music; it is not typically found within a synagogue or associated with prayer. However it draws heavily on traditional sacred music. Although evidence of klezmer exists as early as the 15th century, most recognizable klezmer compositions originated in 19th-century Eastern Europe. Klezmer experienced several small-scale revivals in the late 20th century, thanks to groups such as the Klezmer Conservatory Band and the Klezmatics. Many of the newer and older klezmer bands were heavily influenced by regional culture. The New Orleans Klezmer All Stars are perhaps the only stable interview. December 2, 2009."Klezmer."
