How to Become a Citizen of the United StatesBecoming a citizen of the United States is a very long process. Not everyone can become a citizen of the United States. There are many requirements and responsibilities to become a citizen, be it of the United States or any other country. Being a citizen of the United States is a very special privilege. People who become citizens should be very fortunate and proud to be citizens of the United States. Even if they become citizens of the United States, they should not even forget their country, but share its joy. The process of becoming a citizen is not difficult, but you must have had a good residency in the United States. This means that you had to obey all laws and be a person of good moral character. To become a citizen the applicant must be at least 18 years old. They should also have been legally admitted to the United States for permanent residency. Individuals who have been lawfully admitted as permanent residents will be asked to produce an I-551 Alien Registration Receipt Card, as proof of their residency. The applicant must also have resided in the United States for five years prior to submitting the application with absences from the United States totaling no more than one year. Additionally, the applicant should have been physically present in the United States for at least two and a half years of the previous five years and have resided in a state or district for at least three months. The most important thing in the process of naturalization, or citizenship, is the moral character of the applicant. This is important because the United States, or any other country, from what I understand, would want a person who has been a criminal or has done illegal activity within that country. An applicant is permanently disqualified from naturalization if he or she has been convicted of murder or an aggravated crime. Furthermore, an applicant is not considered a person of good moral character if he or she has committed any of the following actions within the five years: 1) He or she has committed and been convicted of one or more crimes involving moral turpitude. 2) Has committed and been convicted of 2 or more crimes for which the total sentence imposed was 5 years or more. 3) Has committed and been convicted of any controlled substance law, except a single offense of simple possession of 30 grams or less of marij...... middle of paper...... by citizenship, or because they did not meet the citizenship requirements. One of the most important requirements is residency in the United States. Immigrants can become naturalized citizens after a minimum of 5 years of residence, or in some cases after 3 years of residence, by taking the oath of allegiance in a court or administrative hearing, or by obtaining citizenship through parental naturalization. In addition to the 5.8 million immigrants eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship, approximately 687,000 children may be eligible to obtain citizenship through their parents' naturalization. This is the process by which one becomes a citizen of the United States of America. As you can see there are many things you need to have to be eligible. Some of these things are, for example, a specific age, permanent residency in the United States for 5 years, proof of permanent residency, good moral character, etc. By taking the Oath of Allegiance you accept all responsibilities stated in the oath. When you do that you are a citizen of the United States of America, which I think is the best citizenship a person can have.
