Topic > Who is Nathaniel Hawthorne? - 940

“Let men tremble to win a woman's hand, unless they win with her the highest passion of her heart” is one of my favorite quotes that Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote from The Scarlet Letter. Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American writer, who wrote fictional stories. He was a talented writer who was influenced to use his gift by a well-known man by the name of Ralph Waldo Emerson. I believe Nathaniel had a talent for making stories rhyme with details, thus creating the scene in your mind. Hawthorne had an interesting life, he enjoyed writing short stories, such as Twice-Told Tales” (which he wrote in 1837), and reading. Nathaniel also had a secret that people didn't know then, but people know now. His real birth name is Nathaniel Hathorne, but he added the "W" because he didn't want people to know who his parents really were. His parents "Elizabeth Clarke Manning" and his father "Nathaniel Hathorne SR". where part of the "Salem Witch Trials". He changed his name because at that time he wanted nothing to do with his parents, mainly due to their past and their involvement in the story at the time. Nathaniel Hathorne was writing at an important time in history. He was alive during the birth of Abraham Lincoln in 1809, the start of the War of 1812, between the United States and Great Britain, when Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1832, the Great Depression in 1857, and the start of the Civil War in 1861.Nathaniel helped write a popular piece in 1850 called The Scarlet Letter. It wasn't just any letter, though, it was made of a fine, worn red fabric. People were led to believe that it had a deep meaning, that it interpreted something from historical history.
