Since ancient times, Italy has been influenced by cultural and political aspects from all over the world. Italy has a parliamentary government based on a proportional voting system. Parliament is bicameral, the two Chambers, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic share the same powers. The Prime Minister is the head of the Italian government. The Prime Minister and the cabinet are appointed by the President of the Republic and must approve a vote of confidence in Parliament to take office. In Italy there is a multi-party system. This means that one party is unlikely to gain a majority in the Italian parliament and therefore coalitions between different parties must be formed. From the end of World War II until the 1990s, Italy had a multiparty system with two dominant parties, the Christian Democratic Party and the Italian Communist Party, and a number of small but influential parties. All citizens aged 18 and over can vote. Election turnout in Italy is high, often reaching well over 80% for parliamentary elections.
