Miss Brill represents a terrifying fear that people face every day of their lives, rejection. The most obvious form of rejection that Miss Brill received during the course of this short essay was from a “well-dressed” young couple who sat on the bench next to her. "Why does she come here? Who wants her?" (170) the boy asks, referring to Miss Brill, who couldn't have been more than a few meters away from the couple. This is a blow to Miss Brill's already rather delicate self-esteem. Just a page earlier he thought to himself, “No doubt someone would have noticed if she hadn't been there” (169). However, this cute couple is questioning their place at the park. Mansfield's brutal turn of events is also a way to accentuate feelings of rejection and insignificance
