Topic > Memory and Freedom from the Giver - 778

Imagine that you have no knowledge of the past and have no feelings for each other. Someone would just live a fake life and his parents wouldn't even love him. A world where someone takes a pill to have no feelings, too many rules, and if someone did something they shouldn't have done, someone would have to stand on the loudspeaker and tell everyone what they did. Having no free will and doing everything the Elders tell you, but exactly what you want, which is to be free. No freedom seems a little out of place to me, even though it helps society overcome all the pain. There is no war, music, love, color or suffering. Except for the 11 year old soon to be 12 year old Jonas since he is the one with the memories. Jonas and the Giver were chosen because they are strong people who can absorb all memories, no matter how bad they are. It must be difficult to have a person who keeps all the memories to himself and isn't allowed to tell anyone, but it's his job, so he can't or will be released because the Elders control everything. Someone needs to be able to live life the way they want to, knowing the memories and history. Which brings attention to the next point. In The Giver, the memories would scare everyone due to protecting people for the longest time. As for the quote, "It hurt a lot," Jonas said, "but I'm glad you gave it to me. It was interesting. And now I understand better. What it meant, that there would be pain." he knew the feelings would hurt him, but he was happy about it. He finally knew the story and the facts. Knowing colors, and she had a memory of a lake in the sunny sky that she had given to Gabe when she got him. In our society, people know many memories of life and death. But for... middle of the paper... people in the community don't have a lot of freedom and they deserve to know the story. If I lived in that community and knew nothing about my world, I would not feel safe since I knew nothing about it. However, maybe if I lived there and knew nothing, I accept that it would be better than knowing something horrible, despite all that sometimes people will have to face something alone and won't know how. It might be perfect for someone who isn't curious about all the facts about the community and what happened there, and yet I would. I understand the other side of the story of why someone would want to live there, after all it wouldn't make someone feel burdened or pained, nevertheless I would like more freedom than being exactly like everyone else just because age with all the rules. The only difference is that they have different assigned tasks.
