Music has become ingrained in our daily lives. Ranging from the music we hear during commercials to the popular artists that play on the radio, music lyrics have shaped roles and standards for both men and women. Over the past four decades, lyrics have increasingly begun to describe sex, sexual violence and male domination. Since teenagers are the primary audience for music media, lyrics are generally aimed at that age group. Due to the age range they target, the lyrics mentally influenced women into a stereotypical role of women in society and influenced teenagers to engage in early sexual acts. There are two main sources where these messages could be found within the music media, they are rock and rap. Everyone has a different way of representing women, but it has become an almost predictable topic to try to understand. On very rare occasions there are songs that depict women with a positive perspective, most of the lyrics establish masculinity or the idea that women are the reason for the problem in question. In the rock genre there are two typical forms, cock rock and boy-bop. Both have the basis of degrading women emotionally or even physically in some way. Although compared to rap the idea of male domination is subtle. Teeny-bop presents the male singer as a vulnerable, self-pitying, needy individual; often the texts talk about women being shaped as “unreliable, fickle, [and] more selfish than men” (Frith and Goodwin 12). In the Teeny-bop image men are shown as victims of an affair having dashed their dreams of a long-term relationship with a woman; men are shown as tender, romantic, loyal and eager to find true love where it has become... center of the card... artist or arousal property of the songs. Humorous and violent songs also increased aggressive thoughts (Partenheimer). One of the main concerns is the long-term effects that violent/degrading music has on an individual. Studies have yet to be conducted that explain the effect music has on a person over a long period of time. It is obvious that the content of music media matters regardless of how it is presented. Decades ago the lyrics weren't as demeaning to women or men, but with music evolving like this, it's important to analyze each part of the lyrics to understand their effects. Society is surrounded by music and has very little influence on the topic or what is said. However, understanding what the messages are is a start to preventing misogamy, the idea of male dominance and sexual references or acts.
