The American Revolution was the period in which the thirteen American colonies broke away from the British Empire and formed an independent country, the United States of America. It began in 1765 and lasted until 1783, with results as severe as the war itself. As the American Revolution drew to a close, a period of social and political unrest was occurring in France. From 1789 to 1799, a revolution took place in France that led to the decline of monarchies and churches and the rise of democracy and nationalism. Both of these revolutions led to the creation of new states; the French monarchy became a republic, and the colonies became the United States. There were many positive and negative effects of the American Revolution. The United States gained independence and Great Britain lost its position as an undefeated power. Thanks to this positive result, democracy was able to expand and develop. Another political effect of the war on the colonies was that they could now have their own central government. Instead of relying on the King of Great Britain, they would have their own leader who turned out to be George Washington. Socially, at the end of the war, the idea of egalitarianism emerged which believed in equality for all people. During the war, wealthy servicemen joined forces with poor men who also fought for the settlers' cause. After the war, this company remained and led to the idea of equality for all. The Revolutionary War had a strong political impact on colonists, especially women. Before the war they had no rights other than to raise families. After the war, women also gained the power to divorce their husbands if they wished, although they lost quite a bit of government. Both revolutions also produced two important documents; the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. Both of these documents emphasize the idea that governments must protect the rights of all people. Both revolutions led to equal suffrage but not for women. A republican form of government was established and a constitutional government was established. Both revolutions established an entirely new society in which the middle class profited the most. Finally, both revolutions had dramatic effects outside the country, both influenced the entire world. Overall, the American Revolution was successful and led to the outbreak of middle class revolts in France. The success of the American war led to the French Revolution, although largely unsuccessful.
