Every person associated with football knows how to play it. They know every rule, play, statistic and anything else that can be recorded. There was a certain person, however, who stood out from the rest. This was a man named Vince Lombardi. Most people generally know who Vince Lombardi was. They know him as the former and most famous coach of the Green Bay Packers of the late 1950s and early 1960s. They also recognize him as the man for whom the trophy awarded to the winner of the Super Bowl, the Lombardi Trophy, is named. All this is well known in the world of football. Do any of these people know who Vince really was? Do they know what he did to the game of football? Do they know it changed the game, forever? Not many can actually say they know what Vince Lombardi did to the game of football that left a lasting impression. Other coaches who have left great lasting impressions on football can be discussed. Some names including: Bud Grant, Mike Ditka and Don Shula. If you look deeper, though, they didn't leave such a lasting impression of the game. None of them have really changed the way football is played. None of them liked Vince Lombardi. He was the first to really take risks to change the game of football. Through hard work, dedication and understanding of the game, Vince Lombardi was truly the most influential person in the history of football. Vince Lombardi was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 11, 1913 to the parents of Harry and Matilda Lombardi.(VLEY) His His family was very strictly Catholic, so naturally he was raised in the Catholic Church as a young man. When Vince turned 15 in 1928, he entered Cathedral College of Immaculat…halfway…at age 57. (Packers) Shortly after his death, the NFL inducted him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. (Packers) Even though Vince's life was over, his legacy lived on, and still lives on today. His impact on the game of football will live on forever.
