Topic > Starting a Small Business - 2009

Starting a small business is often one of the most difficult things a person can do. Some people start a business out of pure fascination or even as a hobby. Whether starting a business for personal reasons or simply a desire to make a lot of money, everyone needs to have a plan. Starting a small business is no easy task and preparation can take days if not months. The most important aspect to have is the tempura and heart to start a small business, because without passion no business can be successful. You have to be your own boss, turn dreams into reality, and be willing to market and sell a product. It takes a lot of discipline, long hours and hard work, something many don't have. However, with the right will, passion and dedication, a business can be the beginning of something great. The first step in any business is to think or create a business idea. Without an idea it is not possible to get your business off the ground. The right direction is needed to create a business with a unique idea. However, other options include franchising or purchasing an existing business (1). Franchising allows an individual to operate stores such as Burger King or McDonalds under the company name. It involves taking training courses and a lot of money to start a franchise. A franchisee will have to purchase products and services from the business entity they are franchising from, which is often required. Buying a franchise is like taking a slice of the pie from the franchised company and sharing it with everyone else. Furthermore, having a franchise allows you to communicate and, essentially, become an important part of a further business opportunity (4). Franchising is far from easy to start and maintain. Starting a franchise involves some paper… bottom line, registering a business is not an easy task. Starting a business takes a lot of time, effort and dedication to building a company that may even take years to become profitable. With the right business idea, plan and financing you can lay the foundation for a successful business.
