All employers want you to have a basic understanding of the technology used in whatever area of the information technology (IT) field you enter; however, the most important skill has nothing to do with computers or networks. Tammy from Industrial Credit Union explained it in a nutshell. “Communication skills are a priority. Someone with technology skills is a dime a dozen." What employers are looking for is someone with skills and the ability to communicate. Communication skills are critical to a successful career in IT. In most IT fields, you will interact with clients or customers on some level. Whether it's pitching a product, giving a presentation, or helping them diagnose and solve a problem. While a career in IT can be very fun and challenging, we are in this field primarily to make money As a business owner or employee, we need to do as Chris Powell of Western Washington University suggested and ask ourselves, “How can I increase profits?” It's more than just making the customer happy with fancy words and a sweet voice; it's about communicating the information they need in a way that they can understand. Our ability to do this is critical to making the customer profitable, and as a result ourselves. Unless you are a solo business owner, you will have colleagues or be in a position where you have to manage others. We need to be able to get along with others and be able to work as a team. Being able to communicate with colleagues is important to do our jobs effectively, but we also need to be able to communicate and work with difficult colleagues. Of all the speakers we had in our computer ethics class, the most bitter was Harlan from Retrotech. As a warning about what to expect from colleagues in our future careers, he talked about a big problem in a data center We will all deal with incident response. As a technician, you must be able to determine what the real problem is, what happened, and be able to communicate the solution with step-by-step instructions so that the next person who encounters that problem is able to solve it with the instructions you have prepared. Steve Burnett, of the Burnett Group, said: "Regardless of technological changes, the market for well-crafted messages will always have an audience." While your knowledge of computers is important, the most important issues you will face involve your ability to communicate with others. Not only do you need to be able to communicate your message clearly, you also need to be able to understand what others are trying to communicate to you. Only by developing these skills can you have a successful career in the IT industry.
