Topic > Small Group Workbook - 845

When I started my small group I thought I would have to teach the entire small group hour, so I prepared an hour of small group materials. I prepared for my small group as if I were about to preach a sermon rather than have a discussion. During my first small group meeting it became clear that trying to lead a small group this way wasn't going to work. I found that I was unable to read all the material I had prepared because I had planned to preach, but we finally had a conversation. This led me to change how I prepared to lead my small group next time. I learned that I needed to condense what I wanted to say so that I could share the main points with my small group and at the same time give them enough time to discuss what I had shared with them. One of the hardest parts of my small group was trying to find a time where everyone could meet. We decided to meet on Tuesday at half past seven because when I started my small group everyone in my group no one had anything planned for half past seven. But since the people in my group were collage students, their schedule was constantly changing. As the semester (and my small group) progressed, it became clear that not everyone would always be able to be a part of our small group. At first I heard many excuses why people couldn't come to my small group: papers, homework, work, class activities, or prior commitments. As my small group progressed, I made it clear to my small group members that it was okay to lose our small group if they really had something they couldn't get out of, like work, but that they had made a commitment to this small group so they should plan accordingly to ensure they can come. I told them that this...... middle of paper......or with the flow. Because sometimes you will need to extend your prayer time longer than normal because someone's mom is sick or you may need to interrupt the discussion because someone went to the airport. The goal is to be able to adapt to whatever may happen. The last tip I would give to anyone leading a small group of college students is to have fun with the people in your small group. If you are willing to have fun with your small group members it will be an enjoyable experience. Small groups shouldn't be a rigid place where you can't have fun with your group members. Your small group should be a place where you can just hang out with your group and discuss the Bible together while having fun. If you are willing to have fun and get to know the members of your small group, you will have a great time.
