CLT is committed to offering a variety of robust and useful technology tools for faculty, students, and staff. Currently our tools are limited to classroom and laboratory technologies geared towards multimedia and software applications. While software and multimedia make up the majority of our educational technology tools, we are interested in the growing convergence between technology and the physical world. Thanks to the encouragement of O'Reilly Media and the New Media Consortium we see a growing trend in educational technologies for data visualization, mobile computing and manufacturer-oriented technologies. All of these are driven in an open, collaborative environment that largely resembles the tools and communities that developed the GNU/Linux community and its derivatives. It is with this in mind that we see communities developing the resources and tools to make available production applications that until recently were nearly unattainable to the hobbyist/educator. It is because and through these tools that we wish to engage in this convergence with the help of the Senior Design Project. Our hope is that the work done by others does not detract from the project at hand but allows for creativity and advancement without compromising bogged down in areas unrelated to the goals of this project. In the original project proposal we presented an idea for a low-cost, expandable 3D extrusion printer. In our request we suggested input sources like Makerbot and RepRap. The initial feedback we have received has been positive and has offered several concerns and interests that we would like to address. Q: Would the project be too complicated? This is a reasonable objection that could only be answered through the process itself. ... half the paper ...... as much as possible. At this time CLT would likely not be able to provide any additional financial support, so we understand that the cost may be too high to provide the necessary flexibility in material design and testing. Our hope is that this is not the case. Design Considerations: The biggest design challenge we can think of is increasing the printable area currently offered by the standard kit. While we can certainly work within current limitations, there is almost always an added benefit to going bigger. The second consideration concerns the end user. As stated above, our goal is to make this tool available to everyone. This means making it intuitive and robust enough to allow us to think about the product and not the process. Thank you for your consideration. If we can provide additional information or support, please let me know. Thank you.
