Teaching our young adolescents to abstain from sex until marriage seems hopelessly outdated when television and other media repeatedly reinforce the widespread idea that promiscuity is acceptable because “everyone they do". (Seagren, 2002). So teaching anything but abstinence is madness. At best, comprehensive sex education sends mixed messages to teens and, at worst, unwittingly condones promiscuity. It does not provide a clear understanding of what the consequences are for premarital sex. Comprehensive sex education has been shown to be effective in decreasing teen pregnancies, but at the same time it encourages teens to engage in premarital sex, which most teens aren't really ready for.
