Poetry is the oldest literary genre written in verse. It aims to produce an illusion in the reader's imagination, uses different rhetorical figures and takes different forms of poems. An epic is one such form of poetry and is "an extended narrative poem that recounts heroic deeds, journeys, adventures, and episodes in which the action, often in battle, reveals the more-than-human strength of the heroes as they engage in acts ". of courage” and embody the set of values of their nations. In this article I will show that Beowul, the oldest English poem whose author is unknown, is an exceptional example of an epic poem since it shows three of the typical characteristics of this genre: it is long, there is the embodiment of the nation´s values, the main character is a superhuman hero. To begin with, Beowulf is characterized by being an extremely long narrative poem as it consists of the narration of the sequence of events written in 3,182 lines. Each line has two main movements and each half-verse is joined to the other by alliteration, that is, “two or more words that begin with the same sound”, for example when it says: “...grim and greedy, he soon grasped... ” line (121)This repetition of sounds and its fixed rhythm helped the author narrate this long poem. The fact that there are some framed stories within Beowulf is also important, because they lengthen the epic, these are: the story of Breca and the framed story of Beowulf's battles. Another feature of this epic is that it is rich in descriptions: mainly of the mead hall and banquets, which may seem repetitive to the reader, but it is one of the most important features of the genre, which makes it broad. The story clearly reveals the m...... middle of the card...... He is also shown when he fought against the monsters and saved the nation from them. He did it because he loved Denmark and the Danes loved him and honored him and he is explicit in the story when he says: "...we here have found guests in our hearts: you have hosted us well, if ever on earth I will be able to win". memory of your love, oh lord of men, something new, what now I have done, for war work I am still willing!...."lines (814-819) The man of honor said he was willing to fight for the nation when it was necessary he said because he represented the values of Denmark is a perfect example of an epic because some typical characteristics of the genre are clearly recognised: it is long, the main character is. characterized for having superhuman strength and embodying the values of the nation.
