Topic > Mauritius: a multicultural island - 860

Mauritius is an island off the coast of South Africa with a rich history and diverse population. With people from Asia, Europe and Africa, there is a fusion of cultural festivals and traditions that make Mauritius what it is today (Mauritius Views). Endless colonization and globalization make it an unparalleled cultural source. To fully understand the island's range of customs, one must first look at its history and how it became home to a number of ethnic groups. A major travel destination, Mauritius is an island that has been found to promote a “Let Go” mentality. The famous author Mark Twain once stated: “First Mauritius was created, then paradise was copied from it.” Many argue that it is not only the island's serene landscape that makes the visit special, but also the people who inhabit the continent (Views of Mauritius). Thanks to its central position in the Indian Ocean, the island has become a popular destination on the commercial circuit since 1505, after being discovered by the Portuguese. The island underwent a series of changes of power by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, the French and finally the English until 1968, when the republic gained independence (Nations Online). During that time, a large amount of immigration ensued with people arriving from the coasts of India, its near neighbor Madagascar, and China. Under European colonization, the Chinese began to set up commercial businesses while Africans and Indians were brought in to support the fledgling island nation's workforce. The Creole population of Mauritius is quite large, with Indo-Mauritians making up 70% of the island's population of 1.2 million (Mauritius Views). Mauritius is a rather peaceful island, with no recorded racial or ethnic conflict in over...... middle of paper...rather relaxed mentality. Other countries may be negatively affected by such a merger, but have not been. Without immigration and globalization that mix cultures in Mauritius, the island's population would not exist.
