The Leader and His PrayerWhat an inspiring first sentence is found in "The Leader and His Prayer"! Sanders writes, “In nothing should the leader be further ahead than his follower than in the realm of prayer.” If I could choose one area of my Christian life in which I feel my personal weakness, it is that of prayer. I love reading, visiting, and preaching, but each is concrete enough to provide immediate feedback. I can have a quick sense of accomplishment, whether or not I have accomplished what the Lord desires. While I intellectually agree that I can do nothing without the power of Christ, and while I recognize that His power is released through believing prayer, I pray very inconsistently, especially regarding the ministry itself. I pray without the pressure of any other options. When all the best advice in leadership books and seminar lessons hasn't worked, then I pour my heart out in prayer, see good results, but soon forget how they were granted to me. When conflicts arise in the church and my best counseling skills provide no relief, I pray and God answers. Maybe there would have been less conflict in the first place if I had dedicated myself to prayer. Ideas to improve my prayer life First of all, I need to start praying more for the messages I bring to the church. Since I am used to preaching in series, I don't give much thought to what exactly I will preach next Sunday. I need to start seeking God's heart more about how these truths should be applied to our church in such a short amount of time. I must appeal to Him for the clarity, conviction, and power of delivery that will cause His message to impact the lives of His people. I have to pray about each point to make sure I express it the way He wants. I need to pray for the upcoming worship services and for those that the Lord should be there. Often I preach a message, then realize that someone who really needed it wasn't even there to hear it. I have to pray for those who are our members who need to be present and also for the potential customers who we contacted during the week.
