There is not a single person in the world who does not have conflict. What makes conflicts different is how they are resolved. The play, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is about the Salem witch trials of 1692. In the play, John Proctor, one of the main characters in the play, had many conflicts which ultimately led to his tragic death . He had conflicts with three characters in the play, including his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. He also had a conflict with his former servant, Abigail. And last but not least, he had a conflict within himself, as many people do. Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor's wife, is one of the people with whom Mr. Proctor has a conflict. John has lost trust with his wife because he committed such a cold crime; he committed adultery (cheated on his wife with another woman) with his former servant, Abigail. Knowing this, it caused a trust issue that created a conflict between Elizabeth and John Proctor. Even when she found out and he told her the relationship was over, she still hadn't learned to trust him. "Proctor: Spare me! You have forgotten nothing and forgive nothing. Learn charity, woman. I have stood on tiptoe in this house all seven months since she left. I have not moved from there. to there without thinking of pleasing you, and still an eternal funeral marches around your heart I cannot speak but I am doubted, every moment judged for lies, as if I enter a court when I enter this house." (Miller 1065) This quote shows how he is fed up with his wife not trusting him and how he feels, she judges him. "Elizabeth... you were alone with her." (Miller1065) John Proctor was alone with Abigail (his lover) and did not tell his wife that they were alone. So when he said it, it basically came out as "yeah honey, I was just with the women I cheated with" (not a real quote) the conflict between the two could be considered a major trust issue. John Proctor was having an affair with his ex-servant, Abigail. John Proctor eventually wanted to end the relationship, for the obvious reason that he wanted to be a "good man." Abigail didn't want to end the relationship, she was still in love with John Proctor "Abigail: John I wait for you every night" (1045 Miller), she still wants to be with him.
