Topic > Abortion is Moral - 1018

Suppose there is a country, referred to in this article as Country X, in which women are believed to be the inferior sex. As a result, women are not afforded the rights and freedoms enjoyed by their male counterparts. For example, they have no control over the social, political or economic areas of their lives and receive very limited education. A woman residing in Country Drawing on Rosalind Hursthouse's views regarding virtue ethics and abortion, and applying her ideas to the above-mentioned scenario, we can evaluate how virtue theory would solve this particular moral problem. Hursthouse's theory, applied to this scenario, should withstand criticism without undermining its application to morality. Abortion, if viewed with the “right attitude” and done for a good reason given the circumstances, may be the morally right action to take. Virtue ethics, as defined by Hursthouse, links the idea of a right action to that of a virtuous agent. An action is right if a virtuous agent, one who is aware of and practices the virtues, performs it in that context. It clarifies what is meant by “virtues,” describing them as characteristics necessary for living a good, or “flourishing,” life. (249) With specific reference to abortion, she maintains that the virtuousness or badness of the act must be ascertained in each case through the formulation of three questions. First of all, what are the influencing facts (both biological and emotional in nature) and does the woman have the “right attitude” towards them? Then, what kind of life is… middle of the paper… the standard of living and the invocation of wisdom and benevolence. Although his action is morally right to take, this does not mean that abortion is an act without injustice. Hursthouse calls this injustice a “moral failure.” (262) In this case, it would be attributed to the society of Country X, which allowed the killing of a human fetus to be morally preferable to its birth.
