--1- What information does China censor? And why? China censors a number of things. Most of the time these are negative things about the government, but they could also be about security issues, murders, and some specific medical issues. China is very paranoid about the UN because they care about human rights. If any information about the rules of the Central Propaganda Department is released anyway, then the government will attempt and most likely succeed in prosecuting the person. Posting about any type of human rights violation will get the poster into trouble. In most cases the purpose of censorship is to prevent panic, reduce protests and try not to let other countries get involved. If a few people insult the government online nothing serious happens, but if a larger group does it then the government will get involved. China doesn't just censor, they also add things that make them look better. Sometimes they take over a website and change its content to the exact opposite. When there is a change within the government, monitoring increases and laws become stricter. In contrast, during the Olympics, levels of censorship and monitoring decrease due to all the tourists and all the advertising. 2- How is the media controlled? The media is controlled in various ways. The most common way is to completely remove or replace the information. The Great Firewall is what people call the firewall that blocks users from reaching certain sites. To find sites that need censorship, they create algorithms to browse the Internet for blacklisted words. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are required to cooperate with the government and sign the public pledge, which has been criticized by the United States... mid-paper... concerned about China and its censorship. Some companies do not want to initiate deals due to limited Internet access. All the monitoring and censorship causes problems with business, trade and the economy. Many countries are also concerned about the way people in China are treated. Some companies do not want to rely on a country with human rights abuses. Another problem is that more and more trade and other economic-related activities are being conducted online, but with the Great Firewall the Internet slows down and makes it harder to keep up. Random internet shutdowns slow everything down and can cause communication problems. All these problems cost China's trading partners and financial benefits. China is only hurting itself with its monitoring and censorship, and this could cause problems in the future for the long-established country of China.
