The Message of Beowulf Both Shild Shaving and Beowulf were highly honored during their lifetimes. Both were brave warriors, victorious in many battles. Shild conquered many people and many lands. For example, how Shild enslaved soldiers from every land, crowds of prisoners whom he had beaten to terror. He also became the king of the Danes. He was highly honored and became very wealthy during his lifetime. Just as Beowulf had become one of the most famous men in life due to the defeat of Grendel and Grendel's mother. He later also became king of Geatland. He reigned for fifty years, but his time came during a battle with an angry dragon. Beowulf was still very strong as an old man. As was the case with Shild Shaving: when his time came, the old king died, still strong but called into the hands of the lord. Both deaths were honored with huge funerals. Shild Shaving had set out to sea in a battleship full of treasure. Beowulf's body was burned along with enormous amounts of treasure. His funeral pyre was kept burning for 10 days. Both Shild Shaving and Beowulf were incredibly loved and respected by their people. Both were very powerful warriors and capable of extraordinary feats. They conquered lands and peoples, and both died a very proud death. The story of Beowulf centers on the main character, Beowulf. He is a man with extraordinary and superhuman powers. He is capable of fighting enormous beasts without the aid of weapons. In the story, he sails to Denmark to a mead called Herot. The story is interesting in that many things are given names, particularly swords and armor which are especially honored if they aided their previous owners in battle. Beowulf's sword was called Hunting. Herot had been tormented for twelve years by a monster named Grendel. In one night Beowuld conquers Grendel and the 12 years of suffering end. Unbeknownst to Beowulf, Grendel has a mother who then seeks revenge for Grendel's death. Beowulf then fights an incredible underwater battle against her, and is victorious. He then returns to his native Gealand and then becomes king. After about fifty years, a dragon begins to wreak havoc in Geatland. Beowulf blames himself for the dragon and goes to fight it. He dies, but kills the dragon in the process. Beowulf was written around 800 BC This makes it very interesting because it gives you an idea of what life might have been like. In the story, life is all about meads, great drinking halls. Here you can sleep for the night, eat and even drink the sweet alcoholic drink called meade. The mead was the center of the village. If you were a stranger, you might try spending the night there. If you were a warrior, you would sleep there. In Beowulf, the king of Denmark lived in a hall called Herot. Another important aspect of life was honor. Honor depended on who your father was. If he didn't have honor, you wouldn't have it either. Lineage was extremely important. For example, when Beowulf and his warriors landed in Denmark, they were approached by a Danish warrior who questioned them about being in Denmark. Beowulf told him that he was there to fight Grendel, but he also said: We are Geat, men who follow Higlac. My father was a famous soldier, known far and wide as a leader of men. His name was Edgetho. An interesting aspect of Beowulf's battle against Grendel was that when he fought Grendel, he used no weapons. He only used his bare hands. In the story he grabbed Grendel with a jerk so strong that it shattered his bones. Grendel managed to escape, but his arm was torn off. For this reason, it is thought that Beowulf may have been a Berserker. A.
