The Leaping Tree by Rene Saldana, Jr"Outside my door, I could hear him walking up and down. "Apa, the man, was there that he paced back and forth as a lion would do to keep his cub safe from any danger. I wanted so much to be like him." (p. 181) Rey is the main character as well as the narrator of The Jumping Tree by analyzing Rey we realize that he is desperately trying to define a style of masculinity that can make him feel emotionally strong, intelligent, noble , but at the same time defends what he believes in. This analysis of the motives we can clearly describe how the following three motives influence the dramatic experiences of our main character Rey and how it is also the emotional atmosphere (tone) in the story chapter two we notice how Rey looks at the food table, how it has been divided into two sections. On one side of the table there are soft drinks and food, while on the other side there are alcoholic drinks and that's where the soft drinks are located and food. The men of the family stand and drink. "Rey, come and sit here with the men."(14) The reader can guess that Tio Santo's virility has to do with drinking strong liquor and only a strong man is capable of doing it. Tio Santos also begins to question Apa's manhood as Apa refused to take a drink of Vodka. The emotional atmosphere in this chapter starts to build when Tio Santos insults Apa and Apa just shakes his head and doesn't respond.
